CONAN: Here's an email from Kevin in Jacksonville: To this day, I cannot look at those little plastic magnetic letters that you place on your refrigerator without thinking about the "Soul Train" Scramble Board. Besides Don Cornelius' classic love, peace and soul at the end of the show, the scramble board was my favorite part. It always made you wonder why they did it, because the puzzle was always so easy, but it's a classic. RIP, Don. Love, peace and soul. The scramble board, was that something that you paid any attention to?
QUINONES: Yeah, yeah, yeah, like, they would scramble these magnetic colorful letters, like, on this circular board. And then you would have to, you know, give you a minute or so, and you'd have to figure out what the name of the artist was.
On Soul Train's latest incarnation, the cartoon train comes toward the screen, then it gets up and starts dancing. It's ridiculous. It didn't do that when I was a kid.Matt, Soul Train came on right after Fat Albert for us, so in a way it was a seamless transition. ZarDon would say "The soul is good. The sheen on your Afro should be glossy" before it spits out a bunch of Afro Sheen products and afro picks. It will then be followed by that big Richard Pryor Wiz head from The Wiz. You can just imagine what that will be saying as it flies through the air.
Every show featured the Soul Train Scramble Board, when a couple unscrambled the letters to solve the puzzle. The answer was often an artist's or group's name, or the name of a hit song. A large board and magnetic letters allow you to recreate the Scramble Board. Another staple was the Soul Train Line, when the dancers lined up, men on one side and women on the other, then danced their way down the line, using a variety of dance steps. A camera set up to capture your friends' dancing adds to the Soul Train ambiance.
Keeping up with the classic elements of the series, within the structure of the program, there were two enduring elements. The first was the "Soul Train Scramble Board", where two dancers are given 60 seconds to unscramble a set of letters that form the name of that show's performer or a notable person in African American history. In describing the person's renown, the host concluded their description with the phrase "...whose name you should know".
I also am an ex soul train dancer ( boy those were the days) I miss don Cornelius his genius generated one of the hottest dance shows in American history soul train will never die it is remembered all around the world, everybody knows the soul train line and all the great performers that got their exposure.RIP Mr Cornelius you and soul train will always have a place in my heart.
It wasn't just that the show offered in-person appearances by Black R&B, soul and funk artists I never saw elsewhere on TV, though that was amazing. I saw Curtis Mayfield, Cameo, Jerry Butler, the Commodores, Mandrill and more. As an aspiring drummer, I never realized Cameo and the Commodores had drummers who sang lead until I saw them on Soul Train.
The program debuted in 1970, shot in black and white and featuring a flimsy-looking set. Yet it launched with many features that would become iconic, including a "scramble board" contest with letters that a couple of dancers would unscramble to spell the names of significant figures. (Spoiler: Cornelius later admitted the dancers were told the answers in advance, to avoid showing young Black kids failing onscreen.)
