Oculus Rift Buy Now Pay Later

Buy now, pay later companies are hot properties. Goldman Sachs is buying GreenSky for $2.2 billion. The fintech company provides BNPL services for people looking to make home improvements. CNBC says the acquisition gives Goldman a boost in consumer finance, which is far different from its old approach of mainly doing investment banking, trading and wealth management. Apparently, regular folks can also be a treasure trove of investment.

Initial prototypes used a Hillcrest Labs 3DoF head tracker that is normally 125 Hz, with a special firmware requested by John Carmack that makes it run at 250 Hz, tracker latency being vital due to the dependency of virtual reality's realism on response time. The latest version includes Oculus's new 1000 Hz Adjacent Reality Tracker, which aims to provide much lower latency tracking than almost any other tracker. It uses a combination of three-axis gyros, accelerometers, and magnetometers, which make it capable of absolute (relative to Earth) head orientation tracking without drift.[18]

In May 2015, Oculus VR announced "recommended" hardware specifications for computers utilizing Oculus Rift, specifying a CPU equivalent to an Intel Core i5-4590, at least 8GB of RAM, at least an AMD Radeon R9 290 or Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 graphics card, an HDMI 1.3 output, three USB 3.0 ports, and one USB 2.0 port. Oculus VR stated that these requirements would remain in force for the life of the first consumer model. The company also stated that while upcoming discrete GPUs for laptops may be able to reach the required performance for Oculus Rift, systems that switch between integrated and discrete graphics may not handle output in a manner that supports the device. Oculus Rift only supports 64-bit versions of Microsoft Windows 7 SP1 or later; Oculus VR stated that the device would initially support Windows only in order to focus on "delivering a high[-]quality consumer-level VR experience"; support for Linux and macOS will be developed in the future.[52][53]

Oculus Medium is an immersive 3D sculpting tool used in filmmaking and video games. Facebook bought the tech and VR firm for $2 billion in 2014 and launched Medium two years later. The terms of the deal were not shared by either of the companies.

To be fair to Oculus, it sets out clearly how it will use the information. But publishers of Terms and Conditions tend to start with the mundane stuff and leave the more interesting (and controversial) bits for later, such as the one line that makes it clear that Oculus/Facebook can use the data pulled from your headset to sell to people who want to enter your consciousness for marketing purposes.

I don't think the $600 price is going to harm Oculus or VR's prospects over the long-term, but it certainly isn't helping in the short-term. Remember, the console crowd will be getting their chance with the PlayStation VR, and that will likely sell for a good deal under $600. We also don't know how much the HTC Vive will sell for, but now that Oculus has made its move, there's a good opportunity for the others to undercut the Rift at a better price point. For people like me, the simplicity of a console and the plug-and-play nature of PlayStation VR was going to win out from the start. My larger concern, from an industry perspective, is if the $600 price tag limits the initial adoption of VR overall, it could make life very difficult on a number of studios who've dedicated themselves to the technology and need to get a return on their investment sooner rather than later. Jobs and livelihoods could be at stake.

The update also allows Apple users to directly sync Oculus Move data with the Apple Health app, eliminating the need to manually input VR workout stats if desired. This comes right as rumors continue to circulate about Apple's own mixed-reality headset, which is whispered to debut later this year and would presumably let you synch similar stats with its existing ecosystem.

Oculus VR plans to release the Oculus Touch controller later this year. It's a similar two-piece control system that lets the Rift track where your hands are in three-dimensional space. It's notably more gamepad-like, with analog sticks and thumb-friendly face buttons. Oculus has not yet announced how much the Oculus Touch will cost when it comes out.Winner: HTC Vive

The Rift is $600, while the Vive is $800. The Vive adds motion controls and whole-room VR for the extra $200, but out of the box the Rift is simply less expensive. That will change later this year when Oculus releases the Oculus Touch motion controllers. Availability and pricing for the controllers hasn't been announced, but adding them to the Rift (in order to get the same motion control features as the Vive) will likely bump up the price significantly. Until then, though, the Rift is the less expensive headset.Winner: Oculus Rift (for now)

The presentation gave another glimpse at Resident Evil 4 VR. Oculus says that the game is entirely reworked and remastered for VR. Weapons and objects are now interactive, meaning players can manually load guns or open a drawer with the Oculus Touch controls. The game will feature various tweaks to frame rate, graphics, and audio to adapt the game to a modern platform. The game will launch later this year. 041b061a72
